$3,000 Goal

In addition to maintaining our six historic properties and gardens, we are raising funds to continue the restoration of Mrs. Jackson’s Original Vegetable Garden—a one-acre community garden rooted in history and service.

This garden is located in the same place that Mrs. Jackson had it, behind the servant's houses.

The garden is designed with four equal quadrants connected by pea-gravel walkways and anchored by a large concrete fountain at its center. Located behind the two servants’ houses and the McBride Library, the space will serve as both a working garden and a place for education and gathering.

Fruits and vegetables grown in Mrs. Jackson’s Garden will be distributed to local food kitchens, while cutting flowers will be used inside the Jackson Mansion and delivered to assisted living facilities and or nursing homes in the area. Multiple community organizations will participate in planting, harvesting, and maintaining the garden, creating hands-on learning opportunities for people of all ages.

The garden will also include a dedicated lecture space, fountains, and concrete benches for students, visitors, and community members to enjoy. An installed fence, central fountain, and twelve concrete benches have already been fully funded and completed.

Remaining needs to complete the garden include:

  • Electrical work

  • Site leveling

  • Materials and installation for raised garden beds

  • Pea gravel walkways

  • Construction of the lecture space

  • Garden plants and boxwood outlines

With community support, Mrs. Jackson’s Garden will become a vibrant, productive space that honors the past while nourishing and educating the community for generations to come.
