Who We Are
Central Susquehanna Sight Services (CSSS) provides Central Pennsylvania residents who are blind or visually impaired with the supportive programs and services needed to live fulfilling and self-sufficient lives in their own homes. Our vision screening and educational programs proactively target the approximately 50% of blindness that is preventable through early detection of vision problems and education on eye health.
80% of all learning is visual!!! Our vision screening program provides vision screenings from 6 months through preschool age children. If a child is identified as having a possible vision issue, a referral is made for a professional eye examination. Hear from some of the parents of the children we have screened:
From Janelle:
My daughter received a free vision screening as part of Central Columbia’s Kindergarten Registration on 05/09/24. She was identified as potentially having Astigmatism and Anisometropia, and it was recommended that she be seen by an optometrist.
Both her father and I (her mother) wear glasses, so it wasn't as much a matter of if she would need glasses, but when. My daughter had never mentioned not being able to see, so we figured that she was still in the clear.
Turns out, the vision screening was right! She has astigmatism in both eyes, and the prescription in one of her eyes is large enough that she needs to be stepped up to the full prescription so her brain can process it while she learns to see with the glasses.
Thanks to the early screening process, we were able to get her glasses over the summer so she can start the school year being able to see all the cool things she needs to learn. She is very excited to wear her new glasses. Mostly so she can see her favorite cartoons better, but I guess reading things is nice, too.
We wouldn't have been able to catch this issue early without the free screening provided by Central Susquehanna Sight Services. Thanks to them, my daughter will have the ability to see all that the world has to offer her budding mind. With your support, many more children could get this opportunity to experience the world.
From Melanie:
And thank you for doing an awesome job with your vision testing.
Little things like Jemma sitting on the sofa and watching tv versus sitting right in from of the tv, being able to point out a bug on the wall from afar and us lying in bed watching a movie together, were all things that went unnoticed before. Also, being able to play / run without tripping over.
From Kathie:
I am a client of Central Susquehanna Sight Services, and I would like to take a moment to say how much I appreciate the services I have received from this valuable organization. I have been associated with them since 2010, and I have learned and accomplished several goals with their help. For instance, they prepare very informative life skills lectures that not only keep us updated on available technology, different means of transportation, and unique life skills, they value out input on what interests us as a group. CSSS is an extremely valuable organization, and I hope to continue learning how to navigate my vision loss for many years to come.
